I climbed Scafell Pike (for example) when I bagged all the Wainwrights. Do I now have to climb it again in order to include it in my list of Nuttalls bagged?

I have “topped up” my original “Bridge” list (for example) of the 2000ft hills of England and Wales by bagging only those Nuttalls (for example) that are not on the list of “Bridges”, so that I have also completed the Nuttalls as well. Do I have to send in a Claim Form to inform you of this?

I have just completed my round of Wainwrights (for example) and enjoyed the experience of planning my hill expeditions and climbing all those summits so very much, that I would like to share it with others. Can I submit some photographs and a short report of my exploits?

Have we answered your question?

Q. How do I find the lists of the various summits on the Registers?

A. By far the best source is now the on-line Database of British and Irish Hills(DoBIH).  This covers all ten Registers, and in most cases gives several sources for each one.

Otherwise, full references to the various accepted hill lists are given in these web pages. Some of the references are now out of print, but can often be obtained from second-hand booksellers (do a search online). Some hill lists have been substantially changed after publication, following further research and surveying of hills. The most altered list is that of the Deweys, Register 5A. The original published list was of 373 tops, but this has now risen to 426 summits. We will try to report any changes to the lists in the Hillwalkers' Register Annual Report in Strider.

Q. Do I have to be a member of the LDWA to enter the Registers?

A. No. There is no requirement to take out membership of the LDWA in order to enter the Registers. However, you may like to consider joining for all the club benefits and to receive our wonderful Strider magazine.

Q. How do I claim?

A. You can link to the Hillwalkers' Register Claim Form here. You should fill it in, save it as a PDF document and email it to hillwalker@ldwa.org.uk. If you would like a certificate or badge, then you can click on this link to the LDWA Shop, and pay the appropriate amount. You will receive an email confirmation of your payment, which should also be forwarded to hillwalker@ldwa.org.uk as proof of payment. You will then be sent your certificate and badge, and your achievements will be updated on the database for you to view on the website here. And new achievements each calendar year will be mentioned in the Hillwalkers' Register Annual Report.

Please note we need one claim form per person per register you are claiming entry to.

Q. May I submit my claim in the form of a letter or email, or simply written on my own sheet of paper?

A. Sorry but no, we need the official claim form to ensure we have all the correct data we need in the correct format. Do email hillwalker@ldwa.org.uk if you are having problems completing the claim form. We aim to help you.

Q. I have no proof that I have climbed all these summits. Am I therefore ineligible for entry into the Register?

A. Not at all! Your total honesty is assumed.

Q. I have made a second (or subsequent) round of a hill list (e.g. of the Wainwrights). Do I have to send in another Claim Form for this round?

A. Yes Please.  Fill in the claim form just as before.  You have probably started and finished with different hills this time anyway.  But do please state the round number in the 'Further Notes or Comments' box.

Q. My friend (or spouse / partner) and I have completed a list together. Do we need to fill in separate Claim Forms?

A. Yes please, this helps to prevent errors in the registers and ensures accuracy of all the data, and accuracy for your certificate too.  One claim form per person and one claim form per register is how we do this, and it doesn’t take long.

Q. I cannot remember the exact dates on which I started and/or finished my list, or the names of my first and last summits - does this exclude me from making a claim?

A. It doesn’t matter if you cannot remember the exact date on which you climbed the first summit on a particular list, so do not worry if you cannot recall this.
It is preferable to give the exact list completion date if possible, and for retrospective claims the month and the year will be acceptable. Please enter the names of the first and last summits on the Claim Form (most walkers can recall these).

Those who give only 'month/year' for their completion date will appear in the Registers at the end of that month, after all those who give an actual date for that month and year. Similarly, those who state only 'year' will appear in the Registers at the very end of that year, after all those who give an actual date. This system means that those with incomplete data do not get a 'completion order' ahead of those who submit full data.

Q. I completed a list of hills many years ago. Can I still make a claim?

A. Yes. There are no time limits to making a claim, and many that appear in the Registers were made as retrospective claims.  Currently, all claims reported in a calendar year will appear in the Annual Report for that year.  But please, don't leave it until late December to submit your claim; help the recorder by sending completions through as you achieve them.  Recorders have busy Christmas lives too!

Q. Is there a fee for entry into the Register?

A. Entry to the Hillwalkers' Register is free, but those wishing to receive a commemorative certificate (or certificates) of their achievement(s) are requested to pay £5.00 per certificate via our online LDWA Shop (this fee includes postage and packing in a large stiff-backed envelope).

Hillwalkers' Register cloth badges, suitable for sewing onto a rucksack, cost £1.50. Again these can be purchased via the LDWA Shop.

Q. Will I receive an acknowledgement of my claim?

A. Yes. On receipt of your claim form the recorder will email you back and let you know when the website register has been updated so you can take a look at your name in lights! Sometimes it will take a few days (holidays etc).

And then of course your certificate and badges as appropriate will be posted out to you.

Q. When will I receive my certificate or badge, and when will my name and hill list achievement(s) be entered on the Register on the LDWA website?

A. The Recorder will try to complete updates to the register for you within two weeks.

If you need the certificate by a specific date, e.g. for a celebratory dinner, do mention this when sending in your claim and we will try to oblige.

Note that you will always appear on the Register before your certificate is despatched.

Q. What personal details will appear on the online Register?

A. The Hillwalkers’ Registers contain only the names of those who have completed the various lists together with their completion details.  No contact or other personal details appear on the Registers.

Q. How do I find my full hill list completion data on the online Registers?

A. Select the relevant Register’s web page.  The names are listed in date of completion order.  Click against your name. The details of your entry on that Register will be displayed, together with your entries on any other of the Hillwalkers’ Registers for which you have submitted a claim.

Q. My full names appear on the Register and on my certificate, but I didn’t want that?

A. The third box on the Claim Form states: “Name that you wish to be recorded in the Register and on your Certificate.  Please complete this box, ...)”. If you do not fill in this box then you will be recorded with your full names on both the Register and your Certificate.  Do please also fill in your full names in the first and second boxes on the Claim Form, to prevent errors being made by the Recorder - there are many “Smiths”, etc, in this world !  Provided that the third box on the form is completed, then only the name given there will appear on the Register.

If this has already happened to you, then email the Recorder and it will be sorted out.

Q. Will I see my name in print?

A. The Hillwalkers’ Register Annual Report is published and despatched to current LDWA members every year with the April edition of the LDWA magazine Strider.  The names of all those who successfully made a claim during the year are published in the Report.  The Report also includes articles, photographs and many other items of interest to the hillwalker.

Q. I climbed Scafell Pike (for example) when I bagged all the Wainwrights. Do I now have to climb it again in order to include it in my list of Nuttalls bagged?

A. No.  But if you wish to do so, that is your choice.  For the purposes of the Registers, one visit to any peak can be counted as a visit to that hill for any list on which it appears.

A. Please inform the Recorder of the fact, by email. If you send in a Claim Form for this, then please mark the form very clearly as a “top-up” for a second list (otherwise you might appear to have completed a second round).

Q. I have just completed my round of Wainwrights (for example) and enjoyed the experience of planning my hill expeditions and climbing all those summits so very much that I would like to share it with others. Can I submit some photographs and a short report of my exploits?

A. This would be most welcome. The Recorder is always in need of photos of hillwalkers and mountain landscapes to illustrate the HR Annual Report. Photos showing completion celebrations held on the final summit of a list of hills are particularly sought.  Articles on any aspect of hillwalking are also very welcome for possible inclusion in the Annual Report; aim for around 500 to 750 words please. If you have a special story to tell (to give just one possible example, you climbed your first mountain over 2000ft in height whilst still a young child and completed the last peak in the Nuttalls list of hills at the grand old age of 85) that would be particularly appreciated.

Please send articles as Word documents attached to an email (or in the body of the email if you don't have Word software).  Please send photos as attachments to an email in jpg format.  For safety, please don't send more than two photos with any one email.
