Big Blean Walk

Kent

Covering over 11 square miles (3000 hectares) to the north and east of Canterbury, the Blean is one of England's largest and most distinctive areas of ancient woodland, important nationally for both its wildlife and history. With its heavy clay and acid soils, woodland was mostly not cleared as farmland and native trees such as oak and chestnut are common. Kent is known as the 'Garden of England' and some old orchards and hop fields intersperse these woods.

The Big Blean Walk can be done as one very long circular walk or in stages. The recommended starting point is Selling Railway Station, but the Walk has been waymarked in both directions and buses provide links to towns and train stations. You can make use of the Great Stour Way, North Downs Way or the Crab and Winkle Way to join or leave the Walk.

A free colourful printable pdf walk guide with a map and information about the history and nature of The Blean can be downloaded from the links below and local Visitor Information Centres provide it. The Walk has been developed by the Kentish Stour Countryside Partnership as a member of the Blean Initiative, which is a partnership of landowners, local authorities, parish councils, conservation bodies and community groups that look after and promote The Blean. There are 18 interpretative panels along the route.
