Harris Walkway - Frith-Rathad na Hearadh

Western Isles

The Harris Walkway (Frith-Rathad na Hearadh) is a route opened in 2001 which links up a series of old paths to make a route of over 20 miles from the northern end of Harris to the Machair at Seilibost. (Machair is low-lying arable or grazing land formed near the coast by the deposition of sand and shell fragments by the wind.)

The route was devised by Bill Lawson, local genealogist, and developed with funding from several bodies. Though it is boggy underfoot for much of the way, the route provides some great views. The route coincides with part of the Hebridean Way.
