Helm Wind Walk

Cumbria

32 km / 20 miles
The Walk takes its name from the notorious Helm Wind which often rages fiercely on the summit of Cross Fell, at 2,960ft the highest point on the route and on the Pennine Way. Care should be taken when attempting the Walk, especially in poor weather conditions.

The walk starts and finishes in Garrigill near Alston and may be walked either clockwise or anti-clockwise. It traverses Cross Fell and Great Dun Fell with its radar station golf ball. It passes through the Moor House National Nature Reserve and the sources of both Rivers Tees and South Tyne are near at hand. Ash Gill Force provides either a dramatic introduction or finale depending on which way round the walk is done!
