Limestone Way

Derbyshire, Staffordshire

A route mainly in the soutern Peak District through the heart of the Derbyshire limestone dales White Peak area, heading south from Castleton through Peak Forest, Miller's Dale, Flagg, Monyash, Youlgreave, Winster, Matlock, Bonsall, Ible, Parwich, Tissington, Thorpe, crossing the Dove to Marten Hill, Lower Ellastone and finishing in the Dove valley at Rocester.
The Limestone Way was devised in the early 1980s by the Rotary Club of Matlock, along a route between Matlock and Castleton proposed by Brian Spencer. The Rotary Club convinced West Derbyshire District Council to establish and promote the trail. Paul Hopkins was recruited as the Limestone Way Liaison Officer to develop the route into an agreed and completed way-marked trail. The Limestone Way was officially opened in the summer of 1986. The ram's head logo on the waymarkers was designed by Roy Geal, who was a member of the Rotary Club and an architect at Derbyshire County Council. The route was extended south to Rocester in 1992 to link up with the Staffordshire Way.
