Thames and Severn Way

Gloucestershire, Swindon, Wiltshire

The Thames and Severn Way is a canalside route designed by the Cotswold Canal Trust and shown on OS mapping and waymarked following where possible the canals between Framilode and Lechlade on Thames, passing through Stonehouse, Stroud, Brimscombe, the Golden Valley, Siddington, South Cerney, Cricklade and passing over the route of the Sapperton Canal Tunnel. Waymarks provided by Stroud District Council mark the route that is shown on OS mapping. The Way has been marked out by volunteers from the Cotswold Canals Trust. Parts of these canals have been restored and work is continuing.

Cotswold Canals is the title given to two connected Gloucestershire waterways, The Stroudwater Navigation and The Thames & Severn Canal. The thirty six mile long waterway links England?s two great rivers, The Severn and Thames. The Stroudwater Navigation runs from the Severn and at Wallbridge in Stroud meets the Thames & Severn Canal that continued to Lechlade. The canals map linked below in the websites listing shows the former canals' routes

The route of the Way aims to follow the line of these canals but where necessary uses other nearby paths including the Thames Path. Its route is the same as the Cotswold Canals Walk (an earlier promoted route covered on this website) apart from the final section from Latton to Lechlade where the Way first follows the line of the Thames, to finally leave it to pass south of the Cotswold Waterpark to reach Lechlade.

The Way can be joined by Thames Path walkers upstream of the Thames source that is near Kemble by walking to the canal path and then continued to the Severn.
