Gloucestershire, Herefordshire

42 km / 26 miles
The Original Ross Round (ORR) was established in 2004 but has now been extended with an additional loop to make a marathon distance of 26 miles and is known as The Ultimate Ross Round (URR).

The undulating route initially follows The Wye Valley Walk to Court Farm at Hole in the Wall where it then ascends up to The Burnt House (civil war connections). It then passes Wobage Pottery to Crow Hill where it is possible to turn off for the smart Moody Cow pub in Upton Bishop. The route then continues on to Hartleton Water where soon after the new extension branches off up to the attractive village of Linton. It then follows a high ridge before descending down to Aston Ingham and then climbing up to May Hill with its hundred Scots Pine trees marking the summit.

The route then descends down to the hamlet of Boxbush with its two pubs on the A40 road. It then passes through hilly agricultural countryside before arriving at Parkfields Country House Hotel where it joins the original Ross Round. The route then continues over Howle Hill before dropping down to the edge of Walford village and continuing back to Ross past the prominent Cubberley estate.

The original Ross Round is still waymarked and after Hartletree Water it turns off the URR and makes its way via Bolitree Castle to the village of Weston under Penyard with The Weston Inn. The onward route then passes Weston Church and it is only a mile or so further before it joins up with the URR at Parkfields.

Apart from these two main routes, it is also possible to walk just The May Hill Loop with a connection to and from The Weston Inn which is 15 miles and there is also an additional and very scenic walk mainly on the western side of The River Wye which is 12 miles and is known as The Loughpool Loop. Both the URR and the ORR are well served by the frequent Gloucester to Ross bus service
