Wirral Shore Way

Cheshire, Merseyside

36 km / 22 miles
From the historic city of Chester to the north western tip of the Wirral Peninsula the route of the Way is dictated by the old coastline of Wirral bordering the Dee Estuary, passing the remains of a Norman fortress used in the Edwardian wars against the Welsh, a line of dried out Elizabethan sea ports developed as Chester suffered a siltation, and a host of villages and seaside resorts. Along the Dee Estuary, the Way briefly links into the Wirral Way and from Hoylake, the Wirral Coastal Walk provides a 10-mile extension to Seacombe. The Wirral Way (12 miles) uses the track of an old railway that goes from West Kirby to Hooton in mid-Wirral offering superb views over the Dee Estuary to Wales. Originally the railway formed a circuit of Wirral and this is the missing link.
