Over Easter 1932, the Great Western Railway put on mystery excursions from Paddington for ramblers as an experiment and were overwhelmed by the response: ? over a thousand passengers turned up. This led to a regular programme of special trains in all directions from London, even across the Channel. Some included fireworks and dancing! World War 2 stopped the fun for a while, but they continued afterwards, both by train and coach, until a multitude of whammies led to their gradual demise and eventual cessation in 2004.
The book contains details of how the excursions started and developed, how they were organised, potted histories of some remarkable organisers and leaders, offshoots that the excursions gave birth to, and reminiscences from organisers, leaders and ramblers.
