The National Forest Way stretches for 75 miles across the newly created National Forest between the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and Beacon Hill Country Park in Leicestershire.
To walk the National Forest Way is to walk within a developing landscape, to see areas regenerated by woodland and re-populated by wildlife. The route passes through both new plantations and ancient woodland, along river banks and canal towpaths, amongst heath land, through wetlands, and across prime agricultural land. The wide variety of landscapes support an equally diverse range of wildlife, benefiting from new habitat created within the National Forest.
The National Forest truly is a walk for all seasons and for all people. For both long distance walkers and day walkers, for nature lovers or history buffs, for exercise or contemplation, it is a route that accommodates all.
This guide describes the route in detail, and is intended to be used both as a reference before and during the walk. It is for all walkers whether undertaking single stages now and again, or in one continuous journey. General maps are provided, along with illustrative photographs and comments on the many points of interest along the way. Details on public transport between the start and end points of each stage are given, together with essential information concerning parking, toilets, accommodation contacts, and the pubs and cafes along the way.
