Grey Stone Books is a small publishing company that specialises in mountain guide books and other outdoor titles. They produced their first guidebook, Bowland and the South Pennines, in 1990 and have been slowly adding to their list since then.

Ronald Turnbull has quickly established himself as one of the UK's leading outdoor writers. In 1999 his book Coast to Coast won the Outdoor Writers' Guild prize for guide books, while Long Days in Lakeland was highly commended in the Lake District Book of the Year contest.
In Across Scotland On Foot, Turnbull, a self-confessed Munro-bagger and keen hill runner, has written a highly individual and humorous account of his crossings of Scotland. He describes in detail a leisurely 18-day journey from Stonehaven to the Isle of Skye, a fast trip across the Galloway Peninsular, and a 3-day route in the Northern Highlands between Evanton and Poolewe. Other routes such as Not the Southern Upland Way, a crossing of Mull, the Wide Way and the author's own version of the Great Outdoor Challenge are discussed, but more briefly described.
