Dewi Roberts, Gwales Review 2003

Gwasg Carreg Gwalch's enterprising 'Walks With History' series now numbers thirty-five titles, encompassing most of the Welsh regions. Anglesey, of course, was a must, and Dafydd Meirion has compiled a very competent guide to what is arguably one of the most interesting islands in Europe.

Those who have never walked on Ynys Môn do not know what they are missing, and it is now possible to go on a circular hike around the entire coastline. This can be accomplished in fourteen separate stages, beginning and ending at Menai Bridge.

Not only is the reader given very precise directions, but the author includes diagram maps for each section of the walk. We are also introduced, although of necessity fairly briefly, to aspects of history.

I found some of the historical information of much interest. In 1785,for instance, a ferry boat between the island and the Caernarfonshire mainland was swamped in rough seas with the loss of fifty-four lives. The one survivor was a Huw Williams. In a further disaster in the Straits in 1820, some twenty-two passengers perished. Once more the sole survivor was named Huw Williams. So, what's in a name?

If you are considering a walking holiday in North Wales and can't quite decide where to go, this book will surely provide the answer.
