The Stroudwater and Thames and Severn Canals traverse some of the most beautiful parts of the English countryside, rich in mills and flowing water for the once prosperous woollen industry. For almost 50 miles from the bank of the Severn to the Thames at Lechlade, the walk follows the line of these old canals, sometimes directly on the towpath, past scenes redolent of industrial archaeology, at others on fieldpaths through pastoral countryside.
The route, which begins at Framilode, on the Severn south of Gloucester, and ends at Lechlade is broken down into seperate sections or chapters within the book. The starting points of the sections are Framilode, Wallbridge, Sapperton, Upper Siddington, Marston Meysey and finishing at Lechlade. There is a chapter on Stroud and its woolen industry and an interesting introduction about the history of the canals. There is also much additional background information of interest within the text, clearly distinguished from the comprehensive route descriptions. Accompanying sketch maps are excellent.
