Lists of the highest points in English counties have been in existence for a long time but John Eckersley has decided to adopt a new name for them and has called these county tops 'ECHOES' (English Counties Highest Original or Engineered Summits). An 'original' summit is a natural one which has not been greatly altered by human activity but an 'engineered' summit is one that humans have constructed. Examples of engineered summits include ancient hill-forts as well as modern tarmac road surfaces.
In this book, each of forty ECHOES is included in a long walk of about ten miles and for the majority of these itineraries there is a shorter option of approximately five miles. With two exceptions, all the walks are circular and so can be made into self-contained single day excursions.
