Les Maple (writing in Strider) April 2008
The full title of the book is "The Novices Guide to Completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk". Many people derive much pleasure and satisfaction in walking this 25 mile route. Starting at Horton in Ribblesdale it takes in the summits of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.
This 4th edition, complete with a list of campsites, b&bs, equipment and training required, contains an updated detailed description of the route to ensure that the novice walker, in particular, comes prepared and is able to complete the walk safely. The author, Brian Smailes, is fully qualified in writing a book of this nature. In 2001 he cycled from Lands End to John o Groats; in 2003 he walked it. In 2005 he walked the Inca Trail in Peru and last year he walked part of the Great Wall in China, cycled from John o Groats to Lands End and completed his 52nd crossing of the Lyke Wake Walk. In the foreward of this book, Geoff Wtittaker has captured some of Brian's exploits of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in a short poem. To help prevent further erosion of the beautiful scenic area Brian recommends that walkers keep to the defined paths.
