The first stage of Northumbria’s Pilgrimage of Light Walk on 26th February –
Durham Cathedral to Castleside. This was the first of the local group anniversary events.
50 years ago a small group of volunteers founded the LDWA and since then, it’s grown into what it is today – the home of everything to do with walking long distances!
Throughout this year we are celebrating this important milestone in lots of different ways, including doing what we do best – walking!
As you will see from the 50th anniversary programme of events, our local groups have certainly risen to the challenge of celebrating this milestone in style! Events include lots of 50-themed walks, several new challenge events, the opportunity to bag 50 Wainwrights over 5 days, a 50-themed I-Spy challenge (which is running throughout the year) and a Whiskey Distillery challenge! The local groups want as many members as possible to feel included in the celebrations so many are offering the option of shorter distances via figure of eight walks. As well as lots of walks – many of the groups are holding celebration lunches, afternoon teas and dinners.
Further details of the 50th Anniversary events can be found on the local group’s website. Please support your local group by getting involved with the celebrations (please send us your photographs of the celebrations to Communications@ldwa.org.uk)
A big thank you to all the groups who have worked hard (and still are) on their programme of activities and events to mark this important milestone.
