As this thread notes there are a range of technology options. What you use really depends on what you perceive as your situation/risk
There are plenty of simple tracking options using a smartphone, possible the simplest is to use googles
location sharing.
There are also plenty of options for standalone trackers of the type that David mentioned, which are not expensive ~£30 off
ebay, or if you want a more complete/supported version
vodafone will sell you a tracker for £60.
As said these wont work without mobile coverage, however if someone is getting concerned about you then the last location will give anyone looking for you the bulk of the information needed to initiate a search.
At the other end and you really will be in the middle of nowhere then maybe a personal location beacon (eg a Breitling emergency
watch) is what is approprate.
I think the interesting option for events is the way that BLE devices have dropped in price. It would be entirely viable to use such tags and automate the recording of entrants past an autonomous control point.
