Glasgow, N Lanarkshire, S Lanarkshire

60 km / 37 miles
A multi-user route completed in 2009, following the course of the River Clyde from the centre of Glasgow through Hamilton, Strathclyde Park and Lanark. It passes the attractions of Bothwell Castle and woods, the David Livingstone Centre (biography listed below; there is an H M Stanley Trail too), Strathclyde Country Park, the Palace Grounds and Mausoleum at Hamilton, and the Barons Haugh Nature Reserve to end at the spectacular Falls of Clyde, just upriver from the UNESCO World Heritage village of New Lanark with its historic cotton mills. Reaching the Falls of Clyde it passes Corra Linn and the path ends at the upper Bonnington Linn falls.

Route leaflets with schematic maps covering the route in six sections are available for free PDF download from the South Lanarkshire Counci website below. OS Explorer maps show the route, except for the short section between NS811498 near Mauldslie Mains and NS823479 north of Crossford on the east bank. Much of the route passes through privately owned working landscapes. There have been past isolated access difficulties. Details of ongoing route availablity are available from the Access Development Officer (Simon Pilpel on 01698 543421 and email simon.pilpel@southlanarkshire.gov.uk).

The book 'River Clyde - from The Source to The Sea' provides background and history and also details 12 simple walks.

In Glasgow, the Walkway links in to the numerous pathways of the city, including the Kelvin Walkway, a waterside walk that heads north of the city to meet the West Highland Way.

AUGUST 2023: A 2km stretch of the Clyde Walkway has been closed where it runs along the riverside bund at Baron's Haugh Nature Reserve (between Motherwell and the M74, east of Hamilton). A diversion is in place which skirts the northern boundary of the Reserve. The closure is stated to be permanent, due to severe erosion of the riverbank caused by flooding.
