Coastliner Way - Malton to Whitby

At Malton, the branch of Coastliner Way going to Whitby (legs 9 to 15 and covering 44 miles) first crosses the Vale of Pickering NCA. It passes close to the controversial site earmarked for gas fracking at Kirby Misperton, calls at Pickering Parish Church to see the rare medieval wall paintings, and then continues across the North York Moors National Park. The Park is known for its heather moorland. Internationally, this is a rare habitat and about 70% of the world's distribution is found in the UK, the largest continuous expanse in England and Wales being in the North York Moors. Other highlights along the route include the Bridestones SSSI, Goathland and the Cleveland Dyke, Falling Foss waterfall and the Littlebeck SSSI.

From Sleights, the trail uses the Esk Valley Walk to Whitby and here the way goes through Pannett Park, the location of Whitby's internationally known museum with its fine displays illustrating the importance of Yorkshire's Dinosaur Coast. Finally, the climax of this branch of the walk is the ascent to Whitby Abbey, the original abbey having been founded in 657 by St Hilda, historically one of this countrys most remarkable women.
