S Yorkshire, W Yorkshire

51 km / 32 miles
A route following the River Dearne from the source to the confluence with the River Don passing contrasting countryside including Bretton Country Park, Barnsley, canals and riverside.

UPDATE MARCH 2021 - The route for this LDP passes through the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, using permissive footpaths. We have been advised that the Yorkshire Sculpture Park have recently started charging a fee of £6 to use these permissive footpaths. Alternative arrangements may want to be made to avoid these charges. One possible option is to go through the village of West Bretton.
It was not proposed to amend our GPX files at that time.

MARCH 2023:It has been reported that the gated entry point to Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) off Huddersfield Road (SE 295123), at the eastern end Bretton Country Park, is now locked, with walkers asked to pay the ticket price of 9 pounds (6 pounds concessions, free for under-25s and pass holders) to make use of the previously permissive paths through the Park. The YSP website ysp.org.uk/visit-us/faqs says:
"Can I use the public rights of way to walk through YSP? You are free to walk along the public bridleway between West Bretton and High Hoyland. Exiting this path and entering YSP Grounds will require an admissions ticket. Ticket checks take place across the Parkland, including at Cascade Bridge where the bridleway passes through YSP."
Our GPX and other formats track file for this LDP have been changed to make use of only the two Right of Ways (the Public Bridleway, and the Footpath from Haigh to Litherop Road) through the Park. (Should YSP change their policy the original route may be reinstated.)
