Durham Railway Paths

Durham

A network of former railway lines which have been reclaimed for use by walkers, horseriders and cyclists. The network comprises the Auckland Way 6km (4 miles), Brandon-Bishop Auckland 14km (9 miles), Consett and Sunderland Railway Path 42km (26miles), Deerness Valley 13km (8 miles), Derwent Valley Walk 17km (11 miles), Lanchester Valley 19km (12 miles), Tees Valley Railway Path 10km (6 miles) and Waskerley Way 16km (10 miles), With the exception of the last one, they are included on OS mapping as cycle routes and can be linked to provide extended linear walks.

Broom Park and Lydgetts Junction are points in common for several walks. Broom Park is the start for the Brandon - Bishop Auckland Walk, Lanchester Valley Path and Deerness Walk. Lydgetts Junction is the intersection of the Waskerley Way, Lanchester Valley Railway Path, Derwent Valley Railway Path and the Consett-Sunderland cycle paths.

The South West Durham Heritage Corridor Project will create a Railway Path between West Auckland and Barnard Castle. The route will pass through Evenwood, Ramshaw and Cockfield.
