The Way follows a curving route through gently undulating farmland and lowland heath, woodland and riverside paths. It takes in Cannock Chase, Lichfield, Kingsbury Water Park, the Arden countryside (see Arden Way), the Avon Valley and the northern aspects of the Cotswolds to Chipping Campden, Swell and Lower Slaughter. The Heart of England Way Association provides a volunteer warden service.

HS2 Diversion: The Heart of England Way Association reported in May 2020 that during construction of HS2 Phase 1, a diversion is in place to the west of Berkswell: "After leaving Berkswell via the board walk, the onward path through to the A452 has been closed [and diverted westward to join a short stretch of the A452]. During the progress of the project [HS2 construction] changes may be made to the diversion route ? The route of HoEW will take [to] a subway after completion". HS2 construction will mean the closure of the part of the Heart of England Way which runs along Drayton Lane between the A453 at SK166006 and Drayton Bassett, in the area of the historic county of Warwickshire to the north east of Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. The closure is reported to occur only between January 8th and 22nd 2023.
