Land's End to John o' Groats

There is no set route for this, one of the ultimate walking challenges in the UK and whatever the chosen route, it will not be less than 850 miles and may be much longer. There are inherent dangers in using lanes/roads but there are various established long distance routes of which advantage can be taken to avoid such hazards.

The Andy Robinson Cicerone book 'End to End Trail: Land's End to John O'Groats on Foot' provides off-road options for walkers in outline, mainly using named long distance paths (LDPs) but including descriptions of linking sections not on LDPs.

The LDWA/Cicerone UK Trailwalker's Handbook (Amazon may have used copies) is a useful aid to planning the overall routing using LDPs, if footpaths are to be used.

Several recent authors describe their experiences of walking LEJOG in a selection listed below, often with some humour. Mark Moxon's book is also available to download as an E-book or PDF. Robin Richards describes his mid-life walk with a light touch and shot through with gentle humour. An account of a 2014 walk (by LDWA member Adam Dawson for a charity) is on the Adam's Walk website and includes detailed information and route mapping. This uses a substantially longer route than the minimum, that included the national tops of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, so would take a little longer than a more direct route. Victoria Morris, an LDWA member, describes her 3,500 mile walk from John O'Groats to Land's End via the highest point of every county in her Highpoints book. Profits from the sale of this book will be shared with Mental Health Research UK.
