The Jubilee Walkway is the capital's most popular walking trail and is one of London's seven top walking routes designated as the Strategic Walks Network. The Walkway was first developed for The Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 and The Jubilee Walkway Trust was then set up in 1978 as a charity to look after its interests in partnership with strategic and local authorities. In the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the Walkway was extensively refurbished, with several gold discs added. In 2012 the Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee by launching the Walkway's sister route, the Jubilee Greenway - also available on the links below

The Jubilee Walkway is designed to link the majority of London's key attractions, and is easy to follow and provides an ideal way to get to know London on foot. Panoramic panels were introduced in 1980. There are signed loops to Kings Cross and the Barbican and when parks are closed alternatives are available. The route may be walked at night. There are numerous public transport links.

The Walkway was designed so that anyone walking it would have "travelled through areas of London noted for entertainment, assembly, ceremonial, and open-air activity, passing many historic sites" (Max Nicholson 1977).

Highlights include: National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, Admiralty Arch, The Mall, Buckingham Palace, St James Park, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, Thames Path National Trail, Aquarium, London Eye, South Bank Centre, Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge, Shakespeare Globe Theatre, Southwark Cathedral, HMS Belfast, Tower Bridge, St Katherine's Docks, Tower of London, Bank of England, Guildhall Art Gallery, Barbican, Museum of London, St Paul's Cathedral, Fleet Street, British Library, British Museum, John Soanes Museum, Royal Opera House, London Transport Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Sites at Westminster and the Tower are World Heritage Sites.

The free leaflet/map may be downloaded or ordered from the from the Walk London link below. In addition, section walking directions and interactive street maps can be downloaded and printed from the Walk London website.

The book 'Walking Across London' features ten walks, 4-15 miles each, exploring central London and further out, visiting London's markets, canals, hilltops and historic villages.
