The Lancashire coastline has a variety of landscapes from the distinctive limestone scenery of Arnside and Silverdale, saltmarshes and agricultural land and the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool and the Fylde coast. Lancaster and Carnforth are passed en route. There are major river estuaries of the Lune, Wyre and Ribble with much birdlife.

There is evidence of past industries based on iron, salt and limestone, alongside the modern businesses of British Aerospace, Nuclear Electric, British Gas and ICI and busy harbours at Fleetwood, Heysham and Glasson Dock and views of Morecambe Bay, the Bowland Fells and the Lake District.

A leaflet may be downloaded from the link below and the route is shown on OS mapping. Sections of the route are liable to tidal flooding: please check before setting out on your journey to make sure the route is still passable, and check tide tables. Parts of the route pass along the seaward side of the sea defences that consist of steep and slippery rocks, difficult to ascend, while the tide comes in very quickly.
