Oswestry Round

Powys, Shropshire

53 km / 33 miles
The Oswestry Round is a 33-mile circular route which combines Offa's Dyke Path to the west and the Montgomery and Llangollen Canals to the east to create a varied and challenging circular walk around the border town of Oswestry.

Offa's Dyke Path is recognised as one of the most picturesque of the official National Trails and the section west of Oswestry is typical of the Welsh Marches - hilly and demanding but always beautiful. In contrast, the canal system to the east provides 16 miles of flat terrain as it passes through a rich and diverse landscape revealing remnants of the region's fascinating industrial heritage.

Starting at the Lion Quays hotel to the north of the town, the Oswestry Round heads west to reach Offa's Dyke Path. This follows parts of the ancient earthwork of Offa's Dyke which still forms the border between Wales and England hereabouts. The southernmost point of the Oswestry Round is the border village of Llanymynech - half in Wales, half in England - with its interesting Heritage Area. From here the route heads back along stretches of abandoned and restored canal, passing through typical Shropshire farmland.

The Oswestry Round has been created as a 1-day challenge for strong walkers but the route description is conveniently divided into a number of sections.
