Walking the Coastline of Shetland - Yell

Shetland Islands

151 km / 94 miles
Yell, the second largest of the Shetland Islands, is 83 square miles in extent, from north to south it is 17 miles long and from east to west at its widest it is 7 miles wide. It is a wonderful island to explore on foot. Many visitors have the initial impression that it entirely composed of peat because the main road north passes through areas where the estimated 200 million tons of raw peat in Yell blanket the island. The coastline however offers a striking contrast and there is an immense variety of magnificent cliff scenery, particularly in the virtually uninhabited north-east coast quarter of the island.
