Way of St Martin

Kent

34 km / 21 miles
A voyage in time, following in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims from Europe who visited the shrines of saints in England, the Way runs from the ruins of St Martin-le-Grand in Dover to visit St Martin's church in Canterbury, and end at the cathedral. It crosses the North Downs, with sections coinciding with the North Downs Way National Trail - Canterbury to Dover Loop, and detours to places associated with writers and artists.

The route follows the history and landscape of the area, from the Bronze Age boat at Dover, through Roman and medieval times to the industrial age. The landscapes include chalk streams and dry valleys as well as the Kent Downs AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

The route was developed by Liz Garnett, a writer and travel photographer, with Alexandra le Rossignol. Her guidebook to the trail is listed below along with her video about the creation of the route. The self-guided pilgrimage route is split into six short linear walks with public transport connections. A GPX file is on the OS Maps app using the link provided on the third website listed below.
