Dover to Dorking Robust Ramble

Kent, Surrey

187 km / 116 miles
The Dover to Dorking Robust Ramble roughly follows an unusual straight line feature on the maps of Kent and Surrey made by the railway line from Dover, through Ashford to Redhill, Reigate, Dorking and that continues on to Guildford. Mention is made where walks run adjacent to stations. It was devised by Colin Bridge, Local Footpaths Officer for the Ramblers' Association in Thanet. This walk was inspired after he experienced the Sussex Border Path and follows its useful format of day sections with an optional different return. For those not able to complete the walk as one, long-distance path, it may be done in sections on several occasions. This also allows the walker to use their own transport and stay in one place for several nights. On this LDWA website the east-west option only is described and the online mapping relates to this direction.

The route's own website (link below) has detailed route descriptions for both directions, enabling the circular walks of the full daisy-chain route, in total over 200 miles of walking in 52 sections.

From Dover the east-west route crosses the Kent Downs AONB and takes lower ground to cross the Low Weald, often in the river valleys of the East Stour, Beult, Medway, Eden and Mole, ending with hillier sections in the Surrey hills to reach Dorking. The larger towns are avoided except for station access and the route passes around Ashford, Paddock Wood and Edenbridge, and uses the riverside route along the Medway through Tonbridge.
