Wealden Round

E Sussex, Kent, Surrey

A route in some of the most attractive areas of the Weald of Kent created to raise funds for the Hospice in the Weald by author Peter Titchmarsh who earlier developed the Macmillan Ways. The walk heads from Tonbridge initially along the valley of the River Eden, linking Penshurst Place, Penshurst village, Markbeech, Cowden, Marsh Green, Haxted Mill, Crockham Hill, Toys Hill, Ide Hill, Sevenoaks Weald, Knole, Godden Green, Shipbourne and West Peckham, to return to Tonbridge along the River Medway. There are several welcoming inns along the route in each of these villages. Chartwell, home of Sir Winston Churchill, is close to the route between Crockham Hill and Ide Hill and may be visited by a small described diversion. Chartwell and Knole are interesting National Trust properties, Knole comprising a large deer park and a major mansion. Penshurst Place is an independently operated property and featured as a location in the Wolf Hall BBC TV series.

A well-produced illustrated booklet, with profits to Hospice in the Weald, describes the route divided into twelve sections, each linking the villages listed above.

UPDATE September 2023
Continuing FSA work means the portion of the right of way which includes the railway bridge to the south of Leigh is closed from August 31st 2023, preventing direct footpath access between this LDP and Leigh. The work is scheduled to continue until the end of the Autumn of 2023. The grid reference for the start of the closure is: TQ 5507 4616. The grid reference for the end of the closure is: TQ 5511 4601.
