Freedom Trail

Surrey, Windsor & Maidenhead

101 km / 63 miles
The Freedom Trail is a long distance walk of 63 miles to the south and west of London, designed to link places associated with events in our history,
Starting at Wraysbury it proceeds through the National Trust estate at Ankerwycke and the Roman town of Ad Pontes (now Staines upon Thames) where it joins the Thames Path.
It then goes through the broad riverside meadow at Runnymede; the historical riverside towns of Old Windsor, Datchet and Eton and along the Jubilee River to Maidenhead.
It then passes through Windsor and its Great Park and Englefield Green, taking in the memorials at Cooper's Hill and Runnymede and then through historical Egham.
Later there is a loop through the vast expanses of Bushy Park, Kingston-upon-Thames and back upstream to finish at Hampton Court Palace.
The accompanying website splits the route into five sections, each one including a comprehensive route description and a plethora of historical information on the places passed on the way.
The website also gives details of several possible options to divert slightly from the route to visit other places of interest. There are also options for two ferry crossings of the River Thames during the walk.
