John Peel Trail

Cumbria

98 km / 61 miles
The John Peel Trail goes between Whicham, in the south west corner of the Lake District, to Caldbeck, in the north of the district. It links the final resting places of two men, both called John Peel. One is the famous huntsman; the other is his great great great grandson, who was president of a local running club, Black Combe Runners, up to his death in 2010. This walk has been created as a memorial to him, and visits places associated with both John Peels.

From Whicham the trail follows a high level route north to Eskdale, and continues up the west side of the Lake District, crossing the lower reaches of Wasdale and Ennerdale, before heading for Crummock Water and the lower country north of Skiddaw. It ends in Caldbeck, where the John Peel tradition is still very strong. A detailed route description is provided to facilitate the trail being done in either direction, with background information highlighting significant landmarks.
