St Bega's Way

Cumbria

58 km / 36 miles
A walk linking the Norman Priory Church of St Mary and St Bega at St Bees, on the Irish Sea coast, to the pre-Norman church of St Bega by the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, through rural West Cumbria and the magnificent scenery of the English Lake District.

The first day crosses the coastal plain and climbs the pleasant hill of Dent, with views along the coastline, ending at the village of Ennerdale Bridge with services and accommodation.

The second day, probably the most strenuous, heads along the north shore of Ennerdale Water, and up onto the flank of Brandreth, descending to Borrowdale (facilities) from the summit of the Honister Pass.

Finally the third day goes by the side of the River Derwent and Derwentwater to Portinscale, continuing northwards towards Bassenthwaite Lake and ending through the grounds of Mirehouse to the ancient church of St Bega on the shore of the lake.

The two churches of St Bega, and also that of St John, Bassenthwaite, will benefit from book proceeds. An inaugural walk took place on 3-5 May 2008. When significant route diversions are needed these are posted on the website.

As well as meeting the Coast to Coast and Cumbria Way, the Cumbria Coastal Way is easily linked from the start.
