Railway Heritage Trail

The Heritage Trail is a 68 mile walk within the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, the route of which connects three preserved steam railways ? the East Lancashire, the Keighley and Worth Valley and the Embsay to Bolton Abbey.

The walk begins at Ramsbottom?s ELR station and finishes at Embsay, and is divided into 16 linked circular stages ranging between 4 and 9.5 miles.

In its journey, the trail offers as much variety as possible, taking in the wonderful countryside of Lancashire and Yorkshire, contrasting with the history and remnants of the industrial revolution. There are moorland sections, cloughs, valleys, riverside paths, green lanes, packhorse routes, bridleways and old quarry tracks, all of which are public rights of way, or where access is free to all. Although the highest altitude gained is only 429 metres (on Top of Stairs) outstanding views from every hilltop over the surrounding countryside will be discovered.
