Wokingham Way

The Wokingham Way was put together by Loddon Valley Ramblers, with the aim of designing a long-distance walk which followed the Wokingham Borough boundary as far as possible, but with the overriding goal of developing walks which would be attractive. They were surprised at how varied and interesting the Wokingham Way proved to be and are sure you will enjoy it too. The leaflet can only provide an overview and whet your appetite. The walk is immensely varied, from the majesty of the broad Thames, where the path follows the river's course north of Henley, passing the weir at Hambleden Lock, to ancient lanes and byways and open fields, and an Iron Age hill fort at Crowthorne Wood and an enclosed deer park at Culham Court. It also includes some of the Blackwater Valley with its lakes, passes the Madejski Stadium and goes through central Reading along the Kennet to reach the Thames.

An inaugural walk took place in August 2012. Waymarking was completed (in a clockwise direction only) during 2013. The route at Shiplake has an alternative, adding about a mile to the route and described in Section 10 of the route guides, using the re-opened Thames-side section between SU777693 and SU776787: this followed a campaign by Ramblers to reinstate this access, with the riverside path here previously only accessible at one end.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2020 - Bracknell Forest Council have confirmed that the railway crossing to the north of Sandhurst (Grid Ref SU 82681 62707) has been closed permanently for safety reasons. The Public Right of Way now follows the bridge around 300m further north. This is a permanent diversion and there is appropriate signage indicating the route of the footpath.
