The route has been redesigned to form two loops starting from Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire. The hilly southern loop takes in the historic towns and villages of Bishop's Castle, Clun, Ludlow, Much Wenlock, Ironbridge and Wellington. The northern route passes through Wem, Ellesmere and Llanymynech on the Welsh border. An extension to Whitchurch provides a link into the Sandstone Trail.

The Shropshire Way Association have waymarked the route with the new orange waymarks and have produced a website.

The Shropshire's Great Outdoors website provides information on a series of linear and circular walks formerly known as the Shropshire Way and waymarked with the old black and white buzzard waymark.
