Teesdale Way

Cleveland, Cumbria, Durham

The Way largely follows the banks of the River Tees as it passes from the remote high moorlands of Cumbria and Durham to the industrial landscapes of Teesside and the coast.

From Dufton it coincides with the Pennine Way National Trail, visiting High Cup Nick, Cauldron Snout and High Force before separating at Middleton-in-Teesdale then passing through Barnard Castle and the south of Darlington to the North-East coast at Warrenby, Redcar. There are rail links at and east of Darlington.

From Middlesbrough Dock, the Tees Link (11 miles), which is waymarked and included on OS mapping, provides a connection to the Cleveland Way National Trail at Highcliff Nab. The E2 E-Route uses the Way's section from Middleton to Middlesbrough and then the Link to Guisborough, in all some 77 miles.

UPDATE October 2021 - Due to the closure of Whorlton Bridge to all users, it is recommended to follow the footpaths to the north of the river rather than the route currently shown on OS Maps. It is understood that because of the historic importance of Whorlton Bridge, a restoration programme has been developed by Durham County Council, in partnership with Historic England and the Environment Agency for the Grade II listed bridge which is also a scheduled monument. Such is the scale of works that they are not due for completion until March 2023.
UPDATE March 2024 - According to the Durham County Council website (https://www.durham.gov.uk/article/25171/Whorlton-Bridge-programme) the bridge repair works are still continuing, though they may be in the last stage(s).
