Northern Crossway

Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland

315 km / 196 miles
This route of almost 200 miles makes a coast-to-coast crossing of northern England in 14 stages. From the west coast at Arnside in the Arnside & Silverdale AONB on Morecambe Bay it goes generally north-eastwards to the east coast at Bamburgh in the Northumberland Coast AONB. The route crosses a corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park via Sedbergh with two days spent in the Howgill Fells and it then traverses the Pennines across the North Pennines AONB. Finally the route passes through the Northumberland National Park with two days in the Cheviots. Other highlights include Middleton Fell, High Cup Nick, the Harwood Valley, Blanchland and its surrounding moorland, and the towns of Appleby and Hexham.
