E-Route 2 UK Section - Middleton in Teesdale to Harwich

Cambridgeshire, Durham, E Yorkshire, Essex, Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, N Yorkshire, Rutland, Suffolk

853 km / 530 miles
The E2 in the UK was opened in 1999 as a result of work by the LDWA. Beginning (or ending) at Stranraer, it joins the Southern Upland Way to Melrose, then St Cuthbert's Way to Kirk Yetholm, from where it follows the Pennine Way.

At Middleton-in-Teesdale the E2 splits into two alternatives. This eastern route takes you to Harwich and the ferry to the Hook of Holland, where the E2 continues across the Dutch delta to Belgium.

In the UK the E2 is generally not signposted, but links up the underlying trails which are waymarked and have various guidebooks and websites.

In detail:
Teesdale Way: Middleton in Teesdale to Middlesbrough; Tees Link: Middlesbrough to Guisborough; Cleveland Way National Trail: Guisborough to Filey; Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail: Filey to Hessle, Humber Bridge, Hessle to Barton-upon-Humber; Viking Way: Barton-upon-Humber to Rutland Water; Hereward Way: Rutland Water to Ely; Fen Rivers Way: Ely to Cambridge; Fleam Dyke and Roman Road Walk: Cambridge to Linton; Icknield Way Trail: Linton to Stetchworth; Stour Valley Path: Stetchworth to Dedham; Essex Way: Dedham to Harwich.

For updates and diversions to the E2 in the UK view the pages for the constituent trails.

UPDATE November 2021: There is a very short permanent diversion at the eastern end of Mount Pleasant North, Robin Hood's Bay due to coastal erosion. This takes users across Rocket Post Field and down an accessible ramp to join a short stretch of the Cinder Track as the route enters Robin Hood's Bay. Further information is available on the National Trails website.
