Roman Ring

Cumbria, Northumberland

84 km / 52 miles
Created by Mark Richards as a green trail alternative to the central sections of Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail, part of which is shared with the Pennine Way National Trail, this route is a response to the concern that the Wall Path has two innate flaws: it concentrates a four-seasons tide of walkers directly upon vulnerable archaeology and it distances the walking visitor from the depth and diversity of cultural landscapes of the wider Hadrian's Wall country in the Conservation Corridor.

The Roman Ring itself runs parallel to and to the south of Hadrian's Wall between Lanercost Priory and Halton Chesters. When walked in conjunction with the National Trail this makes a round walk equal in distance to the entire coast-to-coast trail.

The 20-mile Moss Troopers? Trail, in the same publication, strides out into the wilder country immediately north of the Whin Sill, from Carvoran to Newbrough. By combining several north/south link routes, a number of shorter circular options are possible.
